Let’s Take a Closer Look
Part A is an essential component of original Medicare, automatically issued by the government to anyone age 65 or older that worked 40 quarters in this country. It can also apply to people under 65 and on Social Security disability for 2 years. There is no premium for most senior citizens unless you did not complete 40 quarters of work in this country. It covers stays in the hospital, nursing care, and hospice, with deductibles and copays.
This plan will cover services such as doctor appointments, surgeries, and lab tests. It will also assist you with any required supplies you might need such as a walker or wheelchair that have been deemed medically important to your condition or disease.
Part A will cover the following:
- Health services at home
- Hospital care
- Care in a nursing home and skilled nursing
If you are currently enrolled in Medicare Part C (otherwise known as Medicare Advantage) it is very likely that you have different rules. For the most part, your insurance plan must give you at least some coverage from Original Medicare. In some cases, certain conditions or settings might require specific coverage.
It is important to know that Medicare coverage relies on three main points:
- State and federal laws
- Coverage decisions on a national level made by Medicare about whether or not something is covered
- Decisions from local companies in each state that will process your claim for Medicare. In many situations, these companies will decide whether something is necessary medically and whether or not their area will require coverage.
